London’s Metropolitan Railway was the first underground railway in the world when it opened in 1863.
This section plan dates to around 1867 and shows the Metropolitan Railway route between Moorgate Street to Bishop’s Road as an East to West diagram with an exaggerated vertical scale. Named on the plan are John Fowler - the Chief Engineer for the MR from 1853 to 1869 - and Myles Fenton who served the MR as General Manager 1862-1880.
This plan shows the 1865 extension to Moorgate Street but pre-dates the 1868 extension beyond Paddington to Bayswater, Notting Hill etc. Therefore we date this to circa 1867.
