Produced by Chromo-Wolverhampton for Baker Street & Waterloo Railway Company. Vitreous enamel on rolled iron. Measures 169cm x 24cm (sign). Presented in custom wood frame (177cm x 33cm). Please inspect photos carefully. Loss to enamel at edges and at various places across the sign.
This wonderful survivor dates to 1908 and is one part of a 3-part 'roundel' platform sign (the other two parts being red semi-circles). The first iconic 'roundels' were installed across London Underground stations in 1908 when Frank Pick (Publicity Officer, UERL) saw the need for the station names to stand out among the many advertising boards that covered the platform walls.
Westminster Bridge Road (renamed Lambeth North in 1917) served as the temporary southern terminus of the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway (later contracted to ‘Bakerloo’) upon opening in March 1906. Just 5 months later, the intended southern terminus, Elephant and Castle, opened in August the same year.
Chromo Wolverhampton (short for the Chromographic Enamel Company (Wolverhampton) Limited) were founded in 1886 and among the first to produce vitreous enamel signs. They were used extensively by the London Underground railway companies from as early as the 1890s.
