Vitreous enamel sign on rolled iron set in original bronze frame. Produced by City of Westminster. Circa 1930s. Measures 107cm x 69cm x 3cm. Excellent condition.
This unique sign was located in a subway to Westminster London Underground station. Specifically, in the subway under Bridge Street next to Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) and the Houses of Parliament. A similar sign at the top of the same steps (without the arrow) is shown in the photos from the London Transport Museum archive. The earliest photo is from 1934.
Opened in 1868 for the District Railway, the Bridge Street (south side) subway operated until the 1970s when it was closed and covered up as part of the the Jubilee Line redevelopment.
Featuring some of London’s most iconic landmarks, this sign is in remarkable condition due to its sheltered position.
