The First Miss Saigon Poster - Pre-Opening - Theatre Royal, London (1988)

£495.00

Miss Saigon - "Opening at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in September 1989" (1988)

Designed by Russ Eglin / Dewyntners Ltd for Cameron Mackintosh Limited 1988. Offset lithograph on paper. Numbered Limited Edition 204/1000. Measures 51cm x 31cm. Condition: Excellent, near mint.

This exceptionally rare poster, announcing the opening date of the West End production of Miss Saigon, was the first poster produced for the show. Dated 1988, a year before opening, the cast had not been confirmed hence why they do not feature on this poster like they do on later examples.

Following their success of Les Miserables (1985), Miss Saigon was the second major success of Claud-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boubil working with Cameron Mackintosh. Based on Giacomo Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, Miss Saigon is a musical set during the Vietnam War and similarly tells the tale of an American solider who falls in love with a young Vietnamese bargirl.

The iconic helicopter/face visual was designed by Russ Eglin of Dewytners, the creative process is described by Elgin and Cameron Mackintosh in the documentary “The Heat is On: The making of Miss Saigon”.

Miss Saigon ran for 10 years in London (1989-1999) and Broadway (1991-2001) with many tours and a two-year revival in both cities.
