London Underground Station Map - 1978

Designed by Paul Garbutt, based on the original diagrammatic principles of HC Beck. Printed by Waterlow & Sons for London Transport. Quad Royal size 127cm x 101cm. Print Code XX. Colour lithograph on paper. Condition: Very good. Some light creasing in places and minor edge-scuffing. Please inspect the photos carefully.

This 1978 issue of Paul Garbutt’s station map shows the Jubilee Line as under construction between Baker Street and Trafalgar Square and includes the North London Line. The Jubilee Line opened in 1979 and Trafalgar Square was merged into Charing Cross, as was Strand station on the Northern Line.

Since its introduction in 1964, the Garbutt’s design evolved subtly, seeing the expansion of the distinctive ‘Thermos Flask’ Circle line and everything contained therein. The Paul Garbutt reinterpretation of Harry Beck’s diagram has endured to this day, it remains the basis of the current London Underground map.
