Original Coca-Cola illuminated Sign - "Ask for the Contour Bottle"

Date unknown but circa late 1990s (Shows as tested in 2002). Measures 127cm x 27cm x 7cm. Metal light unit with two acrylic front panels - dismantles easily by hand. Condition: Fully working, clean electrics and both tube bulbs working. The exterior of the metal back unit has rusted in a number of places with the grey paint peeling off. There is a small crack in the acrylic front panel where the bottom left bolt has been over-tightened.

This rare and beautifully designed display sign for Coca Cola features a clever segmented representation of their iconic "contour bottle". Getting up close reveals a background pattern of contour bottle silhouettes.

The Coca-Cola contour bottle was first introduced in 1916. The Coca-Cola Company had a distinctive logo but they did not have any way to protect their business. They proposed the members all join together and develop a “distinctive package” for their product.. A competition was launched between the glass bottling companies to propose a new and distinctive bottle design which would be standardised globally. Until 1916, bottles varied greatly and were generic in appearance. The winning design was by Alexander Samuelson of The Root Bottle Company and it was based on the elongated shape and ribbs of the Cocoa bean.

This is wonderful piece of modern commercial design and a unique light feature.
