It took 5 years between 1990 and 1995, for Jo Rowling to write her debut novel 'Harry Potter and the The Philosopher's Stone'. it follows Harry Potter, a young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his eleventh birthday, when he receives a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Published in June 1997 by Bloomsbury, the book was an instant success, immediately winning 'The Smarties award', which is voted for by children. Success followed quickly in the US where it was released in 1998. Since then it has been translated into 73 languages and made into a feature film as have its 6 sequels. An initial print run of 500 hardback books were printed (sent mainly to libraries across the UK), examples of which have sold for over £40,000.

This is a great example of a 1st edition/ 4th printing UK hardback by Bloomsbury. The fourth printing is almost identical to the 1st with a few exceptions: on p. 53, Harry's shopping list originally contained "1 wand" twice; this duplicate was removed after the first printing. The text on the bottom of the cover also changed from the 3rd printing from a quote by Wendy Cooling to “Winner of 1997 Smarties Gold Award”. Dust jackets were issued on hardback editions from 3rd printing onwards.
