This unusual map of the London Underground from the Chief Engineers Department presents the network as it was in 1951 using Harry Beck’s diagram as it’s basis. Upon the monchrome map, the draftsmen/engineers have applied, by hand, the locations of reversing facilities with pencil annotations. In many cases, disused stations serve as these facilities eg. York Road and Lords. This is a fascinating map that makes me feel very sorry for those that had to use it in ‘emergency’ situations that require reversing Underground trains!
This is a great example of the versatility of Harry Beck’s iconic diagram, lending itself so well to technical and operational maps as well as assisting the traveller navigate the network.
