London Street Sign - Haymarket WC1 - Post Code Error

sold out

Haymarket WC1. City of Westminster. Theatreland.

Enamel sign. Produced by the City of Westminster with Certificate of Authenticity. Unused condition. Original design by Sir Misha Black. Measures 111cm x 41cm. Condition: Excellent, minor loss to the enamel at edges and a touch of rust as expected for signs that have been in situ.

Despite carrying the incorrect postcode, this extraordinary one-of-a-kind London Street sign was displayed for a number of years before the error was noticed and promptly replaced. Haymarket in fact forms the eastern boundary of the SW1 postcode and runs North to South between Piccadilly and Pall Mall. Haymarket is home of some of London’s most iconic Theatres including Her Majesty’s Theatre and Theatre Royal.

City of Westminster put this and many other signs up for sale in early 2021. Commenting on the sale, Councillor Melvyn Caplan, deputy leader of the council, said: “Westminster is home to some of the most iconic street names and postcodes in the world… Interestingly, this particular collection includes a small number of street signs with typing errors, making them truly one of a kind”

This sign was produced in 2009 when all black-strap ‘Theatreland’ street signs were replaced with new red-strap signs as part of a wider improvement scheme for the Olympic Games in 2012.

This sign was purchased directly from City of Westminster and comes with a sign certificate of authenticity.
