Printed by Alfred Boot & Son Lithographers for the District Railway Company. Measures 17.7cm x 25.3cm. 1887. Two-tone lithograph on paper. Folds to a pocket map, cover and District Railway information on verso. Excellent used condition with a couple of small tears at folds (repaired).
Following the opening of the Metropolitan railway in 1863, The District Railway was the 2nd Underground railway to open in London in 1868, running from South Kensington to Westminster.
The District Railway Company issued two map formats, a large scale map laid on Linen between 1874 -1907 and with smaller paper pocket map (like this one) from 1877 through to 1927 - making these among the first maps of the London Underground. These maps showed the District Railway prominently and other railways in a thinner line. The Metropolitan Railway is shown in red but also thinner than its own.
This Victorian edition can be dated to early 1887. On the cover, it mentions the "District Railway Map Fourth edition expected May 1887" (this was released at the Jubilee Edition) and the American Exhibition is also mentioned (also mid 1887).
