Les Misérables US Premiere Poster - Kennedy Centre, Washington (1986)

£450.00

London’s Musical Sensation - Les Miserables - Comes to Washington (1986)

Designed & Printed by Dewynters and published by the Cameron Mackintosh & The Royal Shakespeare Company. Size 51 x 32cm. Condition: Outstanding. Some very light surface scratches and remains of transparent corner mounts.

The London production of Les Miserables by Cameron Mackintosh and the Royal Shakespeare Company premiered at the Barbican Theatre, London in September 1985. In late 1986, before Les Misérables opened on Broadway, it made its United States debut with a short 3-month run at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington.

The success of the Washington production secured the show’s place on Broadway. Cameron Mackintosh spoke of the opening nights in Washington…. “We had a very successful first night. Then I remember having a jolly good lunch on Boxing Day, thinking, “Isn’t it lovely? It’s all going so well!” Just as I was about to munch into my crabcake, I was told that the stage had stopped completely, and in fact we had to cancel two performances. It was hideous!”

This extremely rare US debut poster is a rare survivor in wonderful condition. The striking design by Dewynters, identical to that used for the London production, is an adaptation of the original book cover illustration by Emile Bayard and combines with the distinctive 'Caston Antique' typeface to create was has become one of the most recognisable and iconic visuals of the 20th Century.

Les Miserables is a musical adapted from French poet and novelist  Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name. The original French musical premiered in Paris in 1980 with direction by Robert Hossein.
